the two victorias

Victoria, Victoria...

So, as you know, we both have the same name...which is cute.  Or is it?  It could be kind of annoying or cheesy!  But it is what it is.  Two Victorias are we!

Name background time: My mum and dad struggled to find my name apparently.  They had some rules and neither wanted names that could be shortened!  (WTF? Seriously? My sister is Susannah and I am Victoria!  I have never heard those names shortened, have you?!!!) They were obviously struggling to come up with common ground on the naming front as they were already on "V" in the alphabet, and no doubt a few Gin and Tonics in...

The story goes that Mum originally wanted to call me Virginia...she loved it.  Weirdly she wanted it to be shortened to Ginny (even though apparently she didn't want 'shorten-able' names?!).  Dad put his foot down and said no way to Virginia...too close to Vagina, he said!

(ha! if only they knew then..)

The other Victoria was supposed to be"Bonnie" (a lovely Irish lass) but Vik's mom laid down the law on that one and so they settled on Victoria or "Vittoria" as Grandpa Frank and the Portuguese side of the family referred to her.  Well to be totally accurate, they didn't refer to her by her name at all when she was first born and instead, called her tiny, very preemie self, a "frozen chicken"!

Very nice really!

So - fast forward to now: two Victorias can often get confusing.  We once went to an antique-y style mall place in a nearby town to buy posh hats for a posh wedding we were going to in the UK.  (Yes they still wear hats at weddings in the UK which is a tradition that I love but that is dying rapidly. They are moving away from hats to those funny fascinator things - not totally a fan of those..anyway I digress...)

So there we were trying on posh hats and laughing our asses off (believe we had come directly from the cowboy bar next door so that might have had something to do with it!) and a lovely group of foreign ladies approached us and started chatting and commenting on our hat choices.  We chatted back and forth for a bit and then...the inevitable question:

"Are you two sisters?"  (We get this a lot!  Depending on the crowd, we gage our response.

Sometimes it's just easier to be 'sisters'.

In this case - nice older ladies, antiquing on a Sunday afternoon) - we went with: "Yes"

And then: "What are your names"

And without flinching we both replied: "Victoria"

One lovely lady looked perplexed "Your mother named you both 'Victoria'?"

Uh oh...caught in a lesbian lie we were!  How could that happen?

"Oh - actually, we are step-sisters" we mumbled as we dug ourselves deeper into the trench.

Good times!

The ladies wandered off and we went back to our hats!

So yes...we are both Victoria and we are sort of sisters, from another mister and, 'sisters' in the lady-love kind of way!

Victor-Victoria (we get that a lot!), Victoria Squared, Victory, Vix (I guess this is the collective noun..I like this one!), Vik-Tori-ahhhhhh, TorViken (the human version of the Tur-ducken - very tasty!) and so the list goes on...

Over to you now people - got any names for us that we haven't heard yet.

Drop us a line...chime in, do!
